The voice unplugged – twang!
Voice is just an acoustic phenomenon. Fascinating fact: we all, at the vocal folds, make the same sound when air comes out – ‘zzzzzzzzzzzz’. It sounds like buzzing, and we all make it. It’s how you shape the section between your larynx and the roof of your mouth – the cavern formed by your mouth, tongue, teeth and lips – that gives you your sound. It starts as a buzz and then we shape it on the way out. That is, it all just comes down to acoustics.
When we make resonant sound the false vocal folds have disappeared, the space above the larynx is open and we have as much space in the cavern as we can get. Opening the back of your mouth wider (like a snake) increases the volume of the space yet again, and that gives your voice the warmest tone.
Or you can move your epiglottis and vocal folds to be as close together as possible, to leave just a tiny gap at the top of the vocal folds, and then open the back of your throat as big and wide as possible. You did this naturally as a baby and toddler, and it gives you what’s known as twang. It can be quite acoustically effective because when you have a small hole that then goes into a big hole, it works like a megaphone.
The megaphone effect created by twang.
